About Molluscum
Molluscum contagiosum is a skin disease caused by a virus from the same family as smallpox. It causes the growth of small, usually painless papules (bumps on the skin). They are smooth and firm, often with a dimple in the middle, and generally between the size of the head of a pin and 5mm in diameter. In some cases they become itchy, red, swollen, and sore. Sometimes they are solitary, but more often they appear in small clusters or along injuries due to scratches, lice bites, and tattooing. Most people affected have 20 or fewer molluscum lesions (skin abnormalities). They are almost never found on the soles of the feet or the palms of the hands, but can appear anywhere else on the body. Children tend to be affected on their faces, arms, trunks, and hands, while in adults they are more commonly found in the genital area. Because of their appearance and viral origin, they are often mistaken for warts or, in adult cases, for herpes sores, genital warts, pearly penile papules, or genital acne.
